The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park honors Dr. Nkrumah's life and the contributions he made to Ghana and Africa. The park's grounds, which house his and his wife's remains, were constructed over the site of a historic British polo field. The monument's design has an upside-down sword that stands for peace, is covered in Italian marble, and has a black star on top that represents pan-African unification. The memorial in this location includes a museum, a mausoleum, a park, and the remains of Dr. Nkrumah and his wife Fathia.

Visitors can view exhibits in English at the museum and mausoleum, where information about Kwame Nkrumah's life from his birth and education through his passing in the 1970s is presented. A lot of private belongings are also on exhibit, including the president's former personal vehicle. The trip lasts for around 30 minutes and ends in the mausoleum, which features a skylight over his grave to provide light.

Not only are the museum and mausoleum the site's main attractions, but the park itself is also lovely and well worth a stroll through. On 5 acres (2 hectares) of land that has been tended and landscaped with statues and fountain features, there is a park named after Kwame Nkrumah.

Water surrounds the tomb, representing life, and viewing the museum portion from the outside allows you to fully appreciate the design and architecture that went into constructing Nkrumah's mausoleum.

Tips:

  • Drink plenty of water, especially if you're coming from a colder climate. Accra's high temperatures and proximity to the coast make it particularly susceptible to the tropical climate's rapid dehydration. Always keep a water bottle or carry bottled water with you. Always ensure that the seal is intact before ingesting Voltic Water, a trusted local brand.
  • Make an effort not to eat or offer with your left hand, and always extend a friendly greeting. In Ghanaian culture, greetings are significant and typically take the form of 'good morning/afternoon.'
  • Be sure to master the Ghanaian handshake if you want to win over the locals. First, you shake hands like you normally would, and then avoid using uncomfortable gestures and words.
  • Although there are cars known as Tro Tros, there isn't a regular public transportation system in this place. They are minivans that travel the city and essentially serve as the bus system.
