Middle East
The capital city of Jordan, Amman, is a beautiful blend of modern and traditional. Divided into two parts, East and West, East Amman is conventional and conservative, whereas, West Amman is urban and vibrant. Known as Ammon during Iron Age, it was called Philadelphia during the Greek and Roman era, and the name was changed to Amman during the Islamic period.
Amman is very popular amongst the tourist, and in 2014, it was 5th most visited Arab city. The delectable cuisine, rich history, and modern lifestyle of Amman are worth enjoying for more than 48 hours but here are our recommendations for 48 hours in this beautiful city.
With an eventful day ahead in Amman, it is a good idea to start your day with delicious Jordanian breakfast of falafel and coffee. Head to the famous Hashem Restaurant which serves falafel, hummus, and many more delicious food items and is quick and fresh too.
After a hearty breakfast head to Amman Citadel which is also known in Arabic as Jabal al-Qal’ a. Starting from the Neolithic age, Amman Citadel has been under occupation by various civilizations. The significant buildings amongst the ruins are the Temple of Hercules, a Byzantine church, and the Umayyad Palace. Other notable structures of Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad are also visible at the site. The Citadel’s location is one of the seven hills which historically formed Amman and therefore serves as a perfect spot for some gorgeous views of the city. Make a quick stop at the archaeological museum that houses pottery collection that dates back from Palaeolithic Era.
After Citadel head to Roman theatre that dates back to the 2nd century. The theatre divided into three horizontal sections hold up to 6000 people at a time. The theatre is still in use and hosts many events including the Amman International Book Fair, the Amman Marathon prize ceremony, and musical concerts, most notably the Al-Balad Music Festival.
Visit the Nymphaeum that is at a short distance from the Roman theatre. It is a partially preserved but a divine public fountain.
Take a pit-stop for lunch and don’t miss eating kanafeh, a cheese based pudding which tastes out of this world.
After lunch head to Asi cave that doubles up as a museum that houses a rich collection of pottery dating back from the Bronze age to the Byzantine era.
Spend a relaxed evening at the Rainbow Road, which is lined up with shops and cafès. Choose a cafe with a perfect view of the Citadel and end your day with delicious Jordan food.
Begin your day by visiting Jordan’s Royal Stables, which is home to 250 Arabian Horses. You can take a tour of the stable and visit the museum. End the tour by having a special breakfast with a spectacular performance by the horses.
Visit the Ras al-Ayn Museum that has an extensive collection of archaeological findings of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the lime plaster and reed Ain Ghazal statues.
Head to the downtown’s souks for that souvenir shopping and lunch.
After lunch head to the Royal Automobile Museum that has an astonishing collection of over 70 classic cars and motorcycles.
In the second half of the second day, you can also choose to explore some parts of Western Amman or relax at Jabal al-Weibdeh, a street that has a myriad of options for the foodie in you.
So, get your traveling boots on and don’t miss a chance of visiting Amman over your next weekend!
