The Swan River was essential in establishing the Swan River Colony, the first permanent European settlement in Western Australia. The colony was established in 1829, and it eventually grew into the city of Perth.

The Swan River is named after the native black swans (Cygnus atratus) of the area. These magnificent birds are still visible in the river and its environs, and they have become an iconic symbol of Western Australia.

The Noongar Aboriginal people, who have a strong relationship with the land and waters, place enormous traditional significance on the Swan River. Native Americans living in the area relied heavily on the river for both subsistence and trade.

One of the most recognizable bridges over the Swan River is the Canning Bridge. It links the residential districts of Applecross and Como and provides breathtaking vistas of the river and the surrounding area.

The Swan River is a popular river cruise destination, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience scenic tours and sunset cruises. These cruises offer a distinctive perspective of the river, cityscape, and landmarks.
